FULL SPOILER-FREE REVIEW @ https://movieswetextedabout.com/azrael-review-a-dialogue-free-horror-that-thrives-on-visuals-and-samara-weavings-magnetic-performance/ "Azrael is characterized by the absence of dialogue and a dense visual narrative, challenging viewers to interpret every detail. E. L. Katz's direction, combined with Mart Taniel's captivating cinematography, creates a mysterious, immersive atmosphere, though it doesn't always balance the story's ambiguity with the need for emotional impact. Nonetheless, Samara Weaving's magnetic performance is the true pillar that holds the movie together, making it a compelling experience with several memorable moments of horror and violence, even if some of its more abstract elements may frustrate part of the audience. An audacious, artful work with enough entertainment value to satisfy mainstream viewers." Rating: B

3/10

Dumb and boring where political message seems more important than a story itself. No explanation what happened or what's going on. All we have is a stupid girl who became John Wick and magically managed to kill whole village without a scratch. Seriously, don't waste your time on this garbage. If you stil decide to watch it anyway, bear in mind there's no speech in this movie. It's a bad copy of "Quiet Place" with no plot & bad performance.

6/10

Azrael is one of those movies where the lead actress carries the whole thing on her shoulders. Samara Weaving absolutely owns her role with such expressive intensity and raw energy that you can’t take your eyes off her. She makes Azrael a character worth rooting for, even when the story doesn’t give her much to work with. Her performance is electric, and she brings so much life to a movie that often feels like it’s just... happening around her. Visually, the film is stunning. The cinematography and the dark, oppressive atmosphere set the perfect tone for a post-apocalyptic horror. The Burned Ones are terrifying to look at, and the world feels genuinely dangerous. But where it falters is the script. There’s no backstory, no real character buildup, and the lack of explanation for anything, be it the monsters, the cult, or Azrael’s choices, leaves you feeling like you’re grasping at straws to make sense of it all. A little more depth or context would’ve gone a long way in turning this into something truly memorable. As it stands, Azrael is a chilling, beautifully directed horror movie with flashes of brilliance, but it’s ultimately a missed opportunity. It delivers on mood and style, but it skimps on substance. It’s worth watching for Samara Weaving alone, but don’t expect the story to stick with you in the same way her performance will.

Film students often shoot a horror movie as their first project, as it is the easiest and cheapest option—requiring hardly any dialogue or plot. This film represents an extreme case of that phenomenon: where no one speaks, there is simply no script. Granted, something could have been made of this concept had the plot been more complex. But as it stands, it remains entirely at the level of a student film. Given that, the production costs are baffling; I have seen significantly better fan-made productions for just US$ 23,000. OK, people did their job, so they got paid. The cinematography and performances — particularly that of the lead actress — are good. The crew did a solid job. But the script, direction, and production: What exactly was the point?

4/10

*Azrael* has a very good trick and a rather less convincing idea. The trick is making an almost entirely dialogue-free chase film perfectly legible. The idea is that surrounding that chase with mutilated Christian fundamentalists, sacrificial rituals, mysterious woodland creatures and an apocalypse will somehow make it folk horror. For a while, you barely care about the distinction. Azrael and her companion are already frightened when we meet them, stamping out a fire before it can advertise their position, and the film starts with the useful assumption that danger is somewhere just beyond the trees. When Azrael is captured, escapes, is captured again and escapes again, director E. L. Katz keeps the thing moving with admirable economy. Samantha Weaving has to communicate almost everything through reaction and physical behaviour, and largely succeeds. We know what she wants even when we are considerably less certain why anybody else wants anything. That uncertainty becomes the problem. The mute community is a wonderful piece of scrappy post-apocalyptic production design, all tarpaulin, scavenged metal and dangling objects that seem designed to make noise if somebody approaches. Its one substantial building is a church, elevated above the surrounding earth. The film keeps offering details like these and inviting connections, but rarely develops them. The same goes for the burned creatures in the woods. Their arrival is heralded by a supernatural wind, which is marvellously ominous until you wonder what the wind actually has to do with them. Azrael is offered as a sacrifice, later buried alive in a pre-dug grave, discovers that her coffin effectively has an escape route into the creatures' underground territory, then returns to the surface having learned surprisingly little. There are plenty of striking ingredients. They stubbornly refuse to become a recipe. The finale, involving the pregnant woman protected inside the church and the decidedly unholy result of that pregnancy, finally makes the religious imagery explicit. Yet Azrael's apparent satisfaction with what she has helped unleash remains harder to earn than to explain away. So this is not really folk horror for us. It borrows the forest, isolated community, ritual and inherited belief, but they feel attached to the chase rather than responsible for it. As a lean, feral survival horror, though, *Azrael* works considerably better. Just don't mistake the rustling in the trees for roots. --- Reviewed by FolknHell, the folk horror film podcast · folknhell com Hear the full FolknHell podcast discussion of Azrael: folknhell com/azrael-review along with our other reviews, transcripts and episodes.
